Prince and the Pageant

My sister Jill in the mid-80s wearing her Ohio Miss Teen pageant t-shirt.

Back in the ’80s and early ’90s, my parents were involved with the Ohio Miss Teen pageants. Every year, my sisters and I got backstage access to ALL the drama related to pageants.
One very clear memory is the spectacular meltdown pageant officials threw backstage after one of the girls performed to ‪Prince‬’s “Batdance” as part of the talent competition.
Apparently, the radio-edit played during rehearsal was NOT the version played during the actual pageant. As one of the pageant director’s explicitly explained to an older, clueless judge exactly WHY this was a problem, it dawned on me that there was probably a lot more to Prince’s songs that I just didn’t understand at the time…
Needless to say, that teenage beauty contestant didn’t win. She’d be in her 40s now.

I wonder if she’s reflecting on the day Prince cost her a crown. ‪

It was the last dance of the school year. Since she is on the student council’s dance committee, she stayed after school to decorate and got in her dance clothes there. She sent me this photo. My gorgeous girl. *sigh*

She’s really shot up the last few months. Up to my eyeballs now. She’s going to be taller than me by the end of the year. Probably the end of the summer.

In any case, all those years of dance rehearsing in our living room with Lola and me PAID OFF!!! When Miss C got home from her middle school dance, she proudly displayed the Apple gift card she won by coming in FIRST PLACE in the dance competition.

Apparently, she owned the dance floor by performing the entire “Single Ladies” dance routine.

That’s my girl.
